In this week's episode, Fetal Position, House finds himself performing surgery on a fetus in order to save his patient and her unborn child. Despite his earlier claims that the "fetus" is NOT a "baby" he seems touched during this moment... Just a little peek at House's human side.

House - Does He Care?

House is right. A foetus is not a baby. My line in the sand is drawn at whether the potential mother desires having that foetus transform into a human being. Since the operation is being performed, clearly the Mom wants this to happen.
That's why I think killing a pregnant woman can be deemed a double homicide. If the woman wants to allow the development of the foetus, then it's a child. If the woman isn't ready or willing to be a mother, then it's a foetus.
People can't seem to separate the concepts. I can.
The woman involved was a professional photographer. One of the key scenes was the younger doctors looking at a picture she had taken of House: "He almost looks like he cares". Of course he does.
I'm with Marva, the decision is with the mother. At the point the foetus took his finger, it became a baby. They were doing everything humanly possible to save two lives.
It was a great episode with all of the issues on the table for people to evaluate.
One thing I love about this show is that it leaves the heavy handed preaching out. House wanted to abort to save his patient. Cuddy wanted to save both. The ducklings... well, they pretty much did what they were told. I loved that scene when they say House looks like he cares. That's the key. His character would simply be abrasive if you couldn't see the underlying caring. Kudos to Hugh Laurie for his portrayal!

Didn't desert ya. Been sick. Happy Easter to all here.
Welcome back, TomCat, and I can empathize...

As Jamie pointed out, the key scene was when the ducklings were looking at the picture of House. To expound on that, the photog had just told House that she takes pictures until she finds a shot of a person revealing what they hide, or something to that effect. Then cut to them looking at the picture and saying he looks like he cares...well, there you go.
I agree, this episode did show that House cares. As Lucy said, he would not be an enjoyable character if you really thought he didn't have a heart underneath the rough exterior. It's like the old "All in the Family" - you did feel for Archie underneath it all, he wasn't just hateful.
